Culvert Pipe Installation

After contacting 1-800 Dig Rite the area will be excavated to install a new culvert pipe, or remove the existing culvert for a new replacement pipe. Some debris will be hauled off while some will remain on site for back fill.

Set Grade

Before a new culvert drain pipe can be installed, the grade must be established to ensure proper water flow using a level, or laser transit depending on length of pipe. The sub grade must then be compacted to stabilize the culvert and minimize settling. 

Types of Culvert Pipes

In the past, most all culvert pipes were galvanized corrugated steel pipe. Today you have a choice of a HDPE Culvert Pipe with a dual-wall corrugated outside and smooth inside. The corrugated outside helps to prevent the pipe from shifting in the topsoil while providing better water flow with a smooth interior.

Backfill

After the culvert pipe is installed correctly, it's  backfilled with clean rock. Layers of soil is then placed over the area and compacted as the final grade is set to secure the pipe. For long sections of pipe, Culvert Band Couplers are used to connect each section of pipe.

Culvert Inlet and Outlet

When necessary, install a Metal Apron at the outlet followed with 6" to 8" inch Gabion rock on both sides of the culvert pipe. This will help to help prevent washout around the pipe and debris clogging up the front of the culvert. We can install an optional Trash Guard at the inlet if you have excessive debris such as tree branches which could clog the pipe. This would require periodic maintenance to remove debris.
